People often struggle with procrastination, as habits, beliefs, and emotional states create barriers that prevent them from taking action. Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a psychological approach focused on understanding the changing thoughts and behaviour patterns and offers a valuable tool to address the issue of procrastination.
With NLP, we learn to identify the limiting beliefs, manage our emotional states, reframe our thoughts to build motivation and confidence.
So in this blog, I will be introducing some techniques that help to shift your mindset and make it easier to stay focused!
Procrastination sticks to beliefs like “I’m not good enough to do this” or “The task is too intense for me to handle.” So the first step is to identify the limiting beliefs. So by identifying these negative beliefs and reframing them with positive alternatives makes the tasks more easy to handle and less hectic.
Try to visualise the picture of you completing the task, focus on the sense of relief and accomplishment you will feel upon completion. This strategy can create a positive link with the task, making it more achievable.
NLP suggests another technique called “anchoring,” which involves associating a physical action with a positive feeling. Recall a time when you felt highly motivated, then perform an action like snapping your fingers or touching your wrists. Repeating this kind of actions several times build a strong connection. When you feel that you are on to procrastinate, use this technique to trigger motivation.
The “chunking” technique in NLP which promotes breaking down of complex tasks into small, manageable pieces.Create smaller goals and address one at a time, focusing on the next immediate action. This helps to create a sense of steady progress and reduce the feeling of overwhelm.
Replace the language that feels optional such as ”I should complete this” with more commitment oriented words such as”I will complete this by tonight”.This shift helps to develop commitments.
Try to create an external accountability by using NLP language patterns to communicate your goal and plans to a friend.By expressing this intention clearly can motivate you to follow through.
Imagine yourself completing each part of the task within the stipulated time by handling all the obstacles and staying focused. This kind of mental rehearsal prepares your mind to stay on the track when doing the task in reality.
Adjusting emotional states is another art in NLP.NLP teaches that shifting your emotional state when procrastination hits can change your behaviour.Trying to listen to music, doing breathing exercises or a little movement helps to shift to a more energetic state that supports productivity.
“Future pacing” involves the technique of maintaining the long term impact of finishing and not finishing the task.Think about the state, when you will be a week or month from now if you complete the task versus if you procrastinate. This technique points out the cost of not doing the right action when needed, which can motivate you to act.
If you are a person who procrastinates a lot, apply these NLP techniques in your life to set an environment that supports productivity and builds a positive mindset that forces you to complete what you start !
